Richard Sanderson

Richard Sanderson is a healthcare consultant and practicing psychotherapist in Colorado. He has 35 years of healthcare experience as a clinician, organizational leader and consultant. He began his career as a staff psychologist in a Virginia community-based mental health center. He subsequently served as quality improvement director of a large mental health organization that provided comprehensive mental health services. In 2000, he became executive director of Pathways-Life After Cancer, a NC non-profit counseling center serving the mental health needs of persons and families impacted by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Since 2011, he has served as a consultant to organizations interested in the integration of behavioral health services into primary care and emergency care settings. In collaboration with large physician groups and accountability care organizations (ACOs), Richard has designed and implemented programs that focus on detection and management of cognitive and mental health disorders in medically fragile and elderly populations. These initiatives promote models of care that emphasize care coordination, transitional care management and patient engagement regarding healthcare decisions.

Richard joined the PASRR Technical Assistance Center team as a consultant in 2014. He regularly facilitates PTAC bi-monthly meetings for ten states, provides on-site training, and is the lead consultant for the technical assistance needs of several midwestern states focused on reducing unnecessary nursing home admissions. Richard has conducted national webinars on the value and use of evidence-based, validated screening tools when conducting required healthcare evaluations for nursing home placements and promotes focused consideration of a person’s service needs to preserve a person’s desire to age in his or her community.
